They have chosen some really awesome apps from App Store from each category. This is indeed to make people ease to find better app for their iPhone / iPod / iPad, rather than investing huge in finding better app for their need.
With this huge marketplace of applications, is quiet confusing for any new comer to iPhone / iPod / iPad. I think this is a great way to encourage developers for creating great applications on iPhone platform while pushing them.
