A survey by Appcelerator and IDC brings key insights for iPhone developers as it suggests that developer interest is shifting back from Android towards Apple owing to concerns around fragmentation and lackadaisical interest in Android based Tablets. The report also reveals the rise of ‘mobile cloud’ as a solution to fragmentation. The survey was conducted among 2,760 Appcelerator Titanium developers from April 11 to 13. Key findings of the study include:
-
- 91 percent of developers saying they are ‘very interested’ in iPhone development and 86 percent said they are ‘very interested’ in developing apps for the iPad.
- Developer interest in Android phones cut down by two points to 85 percent and Android tablets fell three points to 71 percent after increasing twelve points in Q1.
- For 63 percent of respondents thought that device fragmentation in Android poses the major risk followed by tepid interest in tablets (30 percent) and multiple Android app stores (28 percent).
- 71 percent of app developers said they are ‘very interested’ in Android as a tablet OS. Only 52 percent are ‘very interested’ in the leading Android Tablet Samsung Galaxy Tab followed by Motorola Xoom (44 percent) and HTC Flyer (31percent).
- In the survey, Microsoft edged RIM but developer interest in Microsoft and RIM dropped substantially in comparison to last quarter. Developer interest in Microsoft fell by seven points, with only 29 percent saying they are ‘very interested’ in the Windows Phone 7, while BlackBerry phones dropped eleven points to 27 percent.
- 62 percent of developers say that it will be impossible for anyone to catch up to Apple and Google.
- 84 percent of developers were found to use at least one cloud-enabled or cloud-based service in their apps today.
- 78 percent developers are using social cloud services like Facebook or Twitter
- 70 percent are using commerce such as PayPal and Apple.
- 70 percent are using their own behind-the-firewall enterprise services like Oracle, SAP etc.
- 65 percent are streaming media with YouTube or flickr.
- 65 percent are using real-time messaging services like Urban Airship.
- 42 percent developers are displaying mobile ads through iAd or AdMob
- 54 percent developers use analytics such as Omniture, Appcelerator, or Flurry etc., in their applications.
- 44 percent install cloud platform services to Amazon, Microsoft Azure, etc.
The survey will surely bring cheer for iPhone developers as Apple gets back to its dominant role in the market. iPhone developers can use the above findings of the study to strategize their app development efforts.
