A report released by real-time bidding mobile ad exchange company Mobclix provides valuable insights to iPhone developers on how gaming application perform in the App Store. The study reveals that 80 % of the top five free apps and 56 % of the top 100 free apps in the App Store are games.

Other key findings from the study are as follows:
- Users, who have downloaded 10 or more gaming apps on their devices, spend an average of 87 minutes per day playing games.
- 62 % of users play games on their smartphones, followed by 22 % who play games on consoles.
- Multiplayer games have increased by 155 %, representing 6 % of gaming apps.
- Action games occupied the highest market share at 16 % in April 2011.
- iPad games have the highest average eCPM at $1.75, followed by iPhone and Android at $1.38 and $0.98 respectively.
- iPad games have the highest click-through rates (CTR), eight times higher in comparison to Android and three and half times higher than iPhone.
The Mobclix study also found that in-app purchases have become a huge revenue source for app developers. As a result, iPhone developers are concentrating more on action and arcade games where in-app purchases can be naturally slotted. App developers are also concentrating on virtual worlds and as a result the category has jumped to 4th most popular category and grown by 125%.
The study also notes that discoverability has been a constant challenge for app developers, and hence they are concentrating on less populated and less competitive subcategories.
