Leading mobile performance ad networks, Moolah Media, is set to announce a fund for android and iPhone developers who use its solutions. Moolah Media’s App.Suite and Mob.Suite solutions will help developers who have difficulty monetizing their users.
“Legacy forms of mobile advertising are broken,” said Shawn Scheuer, CEO and co-founder of Moolah Media.

“Developers and publishers are often overpaying to acquire new users that may use their site or app only once. Moolah’s new monetization tools provide immediate monetization to cover acquisition costs and allow for follow on monetization that translates into pure profit. Best of all, the new ad units within App.Suite and Mob.Suite are effective at monetizing the 95 percent of users that do not make direct payments,” he added.

Moolah Media is also offering an added 33% payout, up to $3 million, for all new android and iPhone developers that use Mob.Suite or App.Suite. Developers have to create an account with the ad network to download the desired SDK.

Some cheer for iPad and iPhone app developers. Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster predicts that iPad, iPod and iPhone owners will download 83 apps this year, compared with 51 last year, a jump of 61 percent. He also predicts that, iOS consumers are likely to spend on average $1.44 per app, a 14 percent increase from the last year. Apple’s App Store dominates the app industry with over 400,000 apps and recently it crossed the 15 billion mark. Whereas its closest rival, Android has over 200,000 apps. Most of the revenue in the App Store comes from downloads from free apps that follow the Freemium model. Munster said that over 8o percent of the apps in the store are free.

Apple identifying apps removed for legal reasons?

June 10th, 2011 by Saptarshi Roy Chaudhury No comments »

Apple’s iCloud has brought some interesting features into your device. Earlier this week, some websites suggested that Apple’s latest service allow any iPhone or iPad user to download previously purchased apps even if these apps are no more available in the store. Engadget reports that it has been able to download Tris, an app which was removed from the App Store three years ago.

As noted by MacStories earlier this week, Apple’s new re-downloading feature in iCloud allows users to obtain previously-purchased applications that are no longer available in the App Store. Engadget was even able to download Tris, an old Tetris clone that was removed from the App Store nearly three years ago.

Macrumors reports that while this feature of iCloud may be useful in downloading applications that have become unavailable but it does seems to be limited to apps removed by iPad and iPhone developers and not those applications that are removed for infringement or violations of App Store policies. Apps that were voluntarily removed for legal reasons may shortly not be available for re-download.

A number of iPad and iPhone developers have reported that upon logging into iTunes Connect they were met with a screen asking whether any of their creations have a legal issue. iOS developers responding “yes” are then presented with a list of their submitted apps with their version histories and asked to identify the legally associated apps. It appears Apple is using this information to identify apps that should not be made available for re-download.

SAP releases next-generation Sybase Unwired Platform 2.0 and SDK, to make enterprise app development easier for iPhone developer.

May 18th, 2011 by nandkishore No comments »

SAP AG and Sybase, Inc., an SAP company, has announced the release of the next-generation Sybase Unwired Platform 2.0 and an improved version of their Software Development Kit (SDK). The platform and SDK is expected to be available within the next few months.

The latest releases from SAP will enable businesses and iPhone developers to create user-friendly business applications that mobilize processes and workflow and provides real-time access to back-office systems across the enterprise.

“We are reaching an inflection point in the industry, where developing and deploying mobile apps tops the priority list this year for a majority of enterprises,” said Stephen Drake, program vice president, IDC.

“The influx of powerful smartphones, tablets and innovative applications is driving widespread consumption of mobile technology, making return on investment in mobile IT much more transparent for companies. Software suppliers delivering a comprehensive, standards-based platform capable of orchestrating the entire mobile framework will demonstrate the most success in this market,” he added.

Sybase Unwired Platform 2.0 and the enhanced SDK help an iPhone developer by providing a wide-ranging, standards-based environment for the development of business applications. Furthermore, it will also enable IT to manage the entire app life cycle from deployment to provisioning, managing and updating through Sybase’s mobile device management solution, Afaria.
“The pervasiveness of mobility and impact on consumers to businesses make it one of the most profound transformations in IT history, and it is a key driver for enabling SAP and Sybase to reach 1 billion people by 2015,” said Dr. Raj Nathan, executive vice president and chief marketing officer, Sybase.

“It is proven that regardless of industry or size, a mobile enterprise is a fertile field for business innovation, competitive growth and profitability. With the release of our next-generation Sybase Unwired Platform and SDK, customers can now take the offensive and embrace mobility by more easily developing highly productive mobile apps that will drive bottom-line results.”

SAP and Sybase has also unveiled a new set of mobile apps built on Sybase Unwired Platform.

Lodsys responds to iPhone developer in-app notice issue.

May 16th, 2011 by nandkishore No comments »

Yesterday, we reported that Lodsys has served notices to iPad and iPhone developers on using its in-app purchasing system. The company also requested iPhone developers to obtain a license within 21 days. Today, Lodsys has responded publicly on the issue through a blog post explaining various elements of the patent infringement issue and why it is targeting iPad and iPhone developers.  some of the questions answered in the blog post are-

Q: Is Lodsys trying to force Apple to take a license by pressuring iOS developers?

A: No, that’s not what’s happening.  Apple is licensed for its nameplate products and services.

Q: What about other Operating Systems such as Android?

A: Google is licensed for its nameplate products and services.  Also, Microsoft is licensed for their nameplate products and services.

Q: I developed on Apple iOS (or other platform), why isn’t Apple (or other OS vendor) responsible, or taking care of this issue?

A: The scope of their current licenses does NOT enable them to provide “pixie dust” to bless another (3rd party) business applications.   The value of the customer relationship is between the Application vendor of record and the paying customer, the OS (is acting as an enabler) and the retailers (are acting as a conduit to connect that value), and taking their % for that middleman role.

Q: What are you charging?

A: In the case of an Application doing an in-application upgrade (and only this scenario), Lodsys is seeking 0.575% of US revenue over for the period of the notice letter to the expiration of the patent, plus applicable past usage.  So on an application that sells US$1m worth of sales in a year, the licensee would have an economic exposure of $5,750 per year.

Lodsys official website informs that the company has licensed patents to over 200 companies including Nokia, Apple, IBM and Google.

According to a report in Guardian, Lodsys claims that it owns the rights to four patents relating to in-app purchases including interactive online ads, online help and subscription renewals.
