Compete, a Kantar Media Company, has recently released a research report- Q1 2011 Smartphone Intelligence survey- that offers interesting insights to iPhone developers on in-app advertising. The report reveals that smartphone users have higher recall of in-app ads than ads viewed while mobile browsing. The findings, part of report, say that 52% of users remember ads they view in mobile apps whereas only 40% recall ads while surfing the mobile web. Among iPhone users, 65% recall in-app ads and only 33% remember mobile browser ads.

Android based mobile phone users with 55% have the highest advertising recall considering both in-app and mobile browser ads followed by iPhone users with 51% and BlackBerry owners with 22%.

The report further says that recall value of text messaging/SMS ads is still low among smartphone users with just 27% of iPhone and Android users remember receiving a text message or SMS ad on their device.

The report further validates the popularity of games in downloaded app categories. Mobile games with 55% top the charts followed by weather apps (44 percent), social networking applications (39 percent), entertainment apps (38 percent) and maps/navigation (36 percent).

“This data is important as advertisers and app developers, among others, contemplate the evolving mobile advertising opportunity,” said Danielle Nohe, director, technology and entertainment for Compete.

“If the behaviors of iPhone and Android users, who have more experience interacting with different forms of mobile advertising, are indicative of where the industry is headed, we’re starting to see what forms of advertising could be most effective moving forward,” he added.

In-app revenue model has become a profitable revenue stream for iPhone developers in the last one year. With in-app ads proving to be more effective, the future may see more revenue for iPhone developers within their apps.

Apple’s iCloud has brought some interesting features into your device. Earlier this week, some websites suggested that Apple’s latest service allow any iPhone or iPad user to download previously purchased apps even if these apps are no more available in the store. Engadget reports that it has been able to download Tris, an app which was removed from the App Store three years ago.

As noted by MacStories earlier this week, Apple’s new re-downloading feature in iCloud allows users to obtain previously-purchased applications that are no longer available in the App Store. Engadget was even able to download Tris, an old Tetris clone that was removed from the App Store nearly three years ago.

Macrumors reports that while this feature of iCloud may be useful in downloading applications that have become unavailable but it does seems to be limited to apps removed by iPad and iPhone developers and not those applications that are removed for infringement or violations of App Store policies. Apps that were voluntarily removed for legal reasons may shortly not be available for re-download.

A number of iPad and iPhone developers have reported that upon logging into iTunes Connect they were met with a screen asking whether any of their creations have a legal issue. iOS developers responding “yes” are then presented with a list of their submitted apps with their version histories and asked to identify the legally associated apps. It appears Apple is using this information to identify apps that should not be made available for re-download.

We informed you a couple of days back that Lodsys has served notices to iPad and iPhone developers for using its patented in-app purchasing system. The company has also asked iPhone developer to get licenses for in-app purchasing system within 21 days. Now, in the issue, The Guardian reports that Cupertino based Apple’s legal department is studying the issue. The Guardian post reports-

Apple’s legal department is understood to be “actively investigating” claims by Lodsys, a patent holding company based in Texas, to have a claim against iPhone and iPad developers who use in-app purchase systems.

So far Lodsys has served notices to about a dozen iPad and iPhone developers who were found to use in-app purchasing system and who the company says are infringing its patent. There are reports that many more iPad and iPhone developers are targeted by Lodsys with notices.

Apple has not yet officially responded on the issue but with its legal department investigating the patent infringement case and mounting pressure from iPhone developers, the coming days may see the iPhone maker playing major role to solve the crisis.
