The app has the backing of big brand iPhone game publishers for the future possibilities the product opens up in iPhone game development.

iTunes Connect Mobile released for all iPhone Application Developers

June 11th, 2010

Finally Apple has released the much needed app for iPhone application developers today. The new iTunes Connect Mobile app for iPhone and iPod touch will help developers to know their product statistics on the App Store. With the AppStore growing to a size of over 250,000+ apps and thousands of downloads daily,  it is very much important for an iPhone application developer to keep track of his apps.

The iTunes Connect Mobile app allows iPhone developers a break-out of sales by day, week, month (5w) and 6 months (26w). Application developers can now easily see in which target markets their applications are doing well and where they aren’t.

iPhone developers may download this cool new application from the App Store right now. However the product may need some time to propagate around the app store before it appears to everyone, so one might need to wait for his turn.

Moscone Center is getting ready for WWDC10

June 4th, 2010

Moscone Center is getting ready to host Apple’s World Wide Developer conference happening this Monday. There’s a big Apple logo outside the convention center’s wall of windows and a huge banner of “WWDC10″, which focuses on iPhone Apps. It is a bigger version of what you see on WWDC official site

There’s something worth noticing here, ‘No’ Mac OS X signs or banner found around and majority of sessions are iPhone Development related talks, though there are quite a few number of Mac OS X sessions. There is no news regarding Mac OS X 10.7 announcements at WWDC10.

Apple has almost abandoned its IT conference tracks focusing on servers and mass development, so that they meet the high demands of iPhone developers. We can easily guess that WWDC10 is all about iPhone developers / development, now.

The following are the pictures taken from AppleInsider.com:

Firefox Home for iPhone with desktop Firefox sync, coming soon

May 27th, 2010

Firefox Home is a brilliant App from Mozilla Firefox community that will sync your bookmarks, history and session to you iPhone with your desktop Firefox. So, you really don’t need worry if you need to leave your desktop / laptop behind to carry your browsing session on iPhone.

For example, if I was browsing through Google Maps and routed my traveling path on it, and now when I’ve to leave my desktop / laptop behind and start driving my car, I really don’t need to set route on my iPhone again. All I need to do is launch Firefox Home on iPhone and click that Google Maps link which just got synced to from my desktop Firefox. iPhone will show me the route on Google Maps which was set on desktop.

Firefox Home provides the list of tabs, history and bookmarks, it’s not a browser in itself. When the user need to checkout the the link, it opens in Safari on iPhone. The unique feature of this app is, it maintains seamless syncing with your desktop firefox.

Why is this useful?

-Left work in a hurry? You can pick up where you left off with access to the list of tabs you just had open on your desktop.

-Need those directions to that restaurant you were just reading about on your desktop? The confirmation code for your flight? Just start typing in the Awesome Bar and those pages will be right at your fingertips.

-Does it drive you crazy to have to enter the full URL on your iPhone that you’ve visited several times from your desktop? You won’t need to anymore with this app.

Apple Invites Tawkon Application Developers to Cupertino

May 18th, 2010

Tawkon developers who developed an app to help users to measure the cellular radiation were invited at Apple, Cupertino.

Tawkon for iPhone was earlier rejected by Apple. Now, when the same App is available for download at BlackBerry AppStore for BlackBerry devices, Apple decided to open their private API to Tawkon guys to make their app full fledge for iPhone.

Basically, the major difference is that the app which was submitted to Apple for iPhone was not background aware whereas the BlackBerry App is. So, when the user is on call on his / her BlackBerry device, it prompt user about the cellular radiation frequency right away as it is running in background already. But an iPhone, which is not capable of running apps in background was not doing the same.

Gil Friedlander, Tawkon’s CEO said, that they’re closely working with Apple’s iPhone Application Technology team to get the Tawkon App to the AppStore.

As an iPhone developer, I suspect that the Tawkon App was earlier rejected because, the new iPhone OS 4 being background / multitasking aware (ability to run more than one app simultaneously) is incapable of making Tawkon App background aware through those 7 standard APIs provided by Apple in iPhone 4 SDK.

Now, when Apple has offered to open up their private API specially for these iPhone developers it is likely that we will very soon see the Tawkon app in the appstore and it will be completely background aware.

Apple Files Patent for Location Specific Temporary iPhone Applications

May 14th, 2010

Apple recently filed a new patent application that describes serving proximity based or location based apps temporarily on a users iPhone or other mobile device. The content would be managed by a central server that would pair a users device location as relayed by the Wi-fi connection or other geo aware features and deliver appropriate applications that the users might like to use in that particular location.

Apple sighted two examples for this. In one they mention, when an iPhone user nears a restaurant, he might be able to get some temporary apps on his screen that tells him the wait time and also there can be an app that would allow him to go through the menu while still waiting to be seated.

Similarly this Apple patent can be used by people in public libraries to get a temporary iPhone app that would allow them to search the library database right on their iPhone without having to log in to the networked computers of the library.
These temporary apps would disappear as soon as the user exits the location.

This would definitely open up a very interesting aspect for iPhone developers as this service is sure to initiate a surge in iPhone application development for local businesses. Also because Apple would be using the users location data to serve this temporary apps, that might just stir up the privacy question once again. Besides, iPhone developers have always wanted to use the user’s location data to make their apps more interesting but now that Apple is opening the door for itself, it is sure to increase the developer’s demand for using such information in their other types of iPhone applications.

OS 4 Beta 3 Gets New Feature for iPhone Developers and Users

May 5th, 2010

iPhone OS 4 Beta 3 seems to be quite more stable than that of Beta 2 of iPhone OS 4. It has brought some great tweaks which all the iPhone developers were looking forward to.

The most important feature which was lacking during the previous beta release of iPhone OS 4 was to quit more than one running App at a time. In order to quit the App we need to tap and hold the running App in App switcher, apps wiggle and has red minus symbol to quit the app. Until now, the app which you were tapping and holding to quit, only that app was showing red minus symbol. In this release, that has been resolved and now whatever app you press and hold to wiggle, all has red minus symbol to quit the app in App Switcher.

Now, the most important feature which every iPhone user were waiting for, since the release of 1st generation iPhone in 2007 – the ability to lock the screen orientation. When the iPhone was first unveiled in 2007, the accelerometer was very unique feature of it. Turn to landscape for landscape orientation and back to portrait for portrait orientation of screen; in Safari, Photos, etc. It was the beginning of iPhone. Now, it has completely changed the way you do your day-to-day work. People were finding problem with it. We can’t read New York Times easily when we are in our bed, it change its orientation too frequent. Now, in Beta 3 release of iPhone OS 4, lock orientation has been added which I believe is the major tweak that iPhone developers would love. Earlier iPhone application developers had to add their own screen lock orientation feature in their App.

There is one more feature spotted. The iPod controls widget in App Switcher. When we double tap the Home Screen key the App Switcher shows up. Now, if we just slide to extreme left we will find the iPod controls & a screen orientation lock key.

Overall, this Beta release of iPhone OS 4 is more stable than any other previous Beta releases of iPhone OS 4. We’re still fetching some more update info on it. If you’ve spotted some more updates on this just fill us up through the comment form.

iPhone Developer Spots Facebook Integration in OS 4 SDK

April 20th, 2010

iPhone OS 4 and it’s SDKs were released for the paid iPhone developers on 8, April 2010. Since then iPhone application developers have been digging into SDKs; After spotting the iChat client services earlier with front facing camera libraries, now, Facebook integration has been spotted by Gunning for Safety (which, amazingly, seems to have two areas of interest: nail guns, and iPhone OS).

According to that blog, Apple is probably working on Facebook’s Event Calendar, Contacts to integrate with Calendar, Contacts app on iPhone, respectively. Currently, iPhone has easy setup options for you to setup your accounts on Gmail, MobileMe, Yahoo, etc. You can simply type in your details and you’re done. Facebook, might get listed in this as well.

There was a huge user request received by Joe Hewitt (iPhone Application Developer of Facebook) during development of Facebook 3.0 for iPhone. So, it might be possible that on the other hand Facebook team will work on existing Facebook App to get the proper end user integration.

Introduction to iAd and How it Affects iPhone Developers

April 19th, 2010

As Steve Jobs showed off iPhone OS 4 on April 8th, 2010, one of the most talked about feature since then has been the iAd – Apple’s own advertising platform for iPhone, iPod and iPad devices. While we have covered some other iPhone OS 4.0 features earlier, this is time we give you an insight into what iAd could mean for an iPhone developer and user.

According to Steve Jobs, founder of Apple Inc., “People aren’t searching on the mobile device, like they do it on desktop”. He feels that if an user needs to know about a good restaurant, he would most likely load up the Yelp ! app rather than searching for it. On the same note, he mentioned that the current ad bars that are served to iPhone users in many free apps are really deterrent to a good user experience because they take the user off from the app that they were using, onto the app store, or open Safari browser or to some other app. As a solution to all these Apple has introduced iAd, their new Ad platform that is integrated into iPhone OS 4.

Apple has a different approach for their new Ad platform. They want it to be ‘interactive’ and ‘emotional’. Current ad platforms which we see on the web in our everyday life are just ‘emotional’ but not ‘interactive’. Apple wants it to be ‘interactive’. For example by clicking on an ad you can visit a shop virtually and purchase goods or watch the video of a product and play little promotional games and make purchases using your linked credit card with an iTunes account.

If all that is being discussed right now comes out well, it is sure to give AdMob and other mobile ad platforms a run for their money as most iPhone developers would likely prefer to use the iAd system.

iAd specifically looks very promising for iPhone developers as it opens up dual opportunity. Firstly developers can integrate iAd within their free apps to generate some additional income. Second, iPhone developers can create a service offering based on this by developing ads for other businesses who would like to use iAd.
